Construction and Commissioning

She was constructed on the banks of the Ohio River by the Jefferson Boat and Machine Company, Jeffersonville, Indiana. The LST 715's keel was laid on 7 June 1944 and she was launched on 20 July 1944. Mrs. Loudis S. Moffatt, wife of ENS. M.C. Moffatt was the vessel's sponsor.

Taken down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans, LA, where she was fitted out, the LST 715 was commissioned on 15 August 1944 under the command of Lt. R. T. Trapp, USN.
